Colgate University for Law School

Hi everyone,

I was accepted at Colgate University as a Benton Scholar. I love Colgate, but I'm wondering how it compares to other top LAC's in terms of law school acceptance rates. I noticed, for instance, that it is not listed by the Wall Street Journal as a top feeder school, while several LAC's ranked lower (Trinity, Bates, Colby, etc.) were on this list.

If anyone could offer me any insight on this, I'd really appreciate it. I like Colgate, but I'm wondering if it could attract the same attention during law school admissions as some of my other top schools like Vassar, Haverford, and Bates.

Thanks a lot.

That WSJ survey was only done once, so don't know if it's an anomoly that Colgate wasn't in their top 50 for that one particular year or not. I actually called the author once about it and he never got back to me. From what I've seen in MBA admissions, Colgate grads have done better than most of the 35-50 ranked schools (including Bates, Colby, Trinity) on that list. As far as law school, I only know a few in the Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia range of schools, but many in the NYU, Penn, Duke, Northwestern, Cornell, Georgetown level of law schools.

Haven't heard of a Colgate student who hasn't been able to get in law school! Just ace the LSAT... Law school is definitely a popular grad school choice for many Colgate grads (not mine, thanks! )

I can't compare Colgate to other schools but I can tell you that a Colgate education will prepare you for wherever you want to go. When you graduate from Colgate, you'll find that you have markedly superior communication skills, people skills, leadership skills, writing abilities, and capacities for critical and analytical thought. Superior not only to how you were prior to entering, but also superior to your peers from other schools. The places that haven't heard of Colgate enough to respect our reputation aren't the ones you'll even consider. Colgate students don't go to night law school. Also, our alumni are everywhere and will do anything to help Colgate people, including when it comes to law school admissions. If we're not a "feeder" to top law schools, it's only because the majority of Colgate graduates go into business. All my friends who've chosen graduate school have gotten into top schools.

Can anyone shed light on Benton Scholars?

Quote:
The Benton Scholars Program is about leadership in the global context. Students selected to participate in this program will benefit from classes and experiences that will ensure that they are poised for success in the 21st century.

The program was developed as a model for how a liberal arts education can be shaped to fully prepare students to think, act, and create in a world that is increasingly diverse and global. Colgate has a long and proud history of graduating students who lead in all aspects of their lives. This new program is part of a university-wide focus on ensuring that this great tradition endures.

The first class of Benton Scholars, selected for 2008-2009, will actively shape the future of the program, blazing a trail for future generations of not only Benton Scholars, but all students at Colgate. The program has been thoughtfully designed to infuse leadership and global themes into the Colgate experience by providing scholars with activities and selected courses that will enrich and bring new perspectives to their experiences on campus and throughout their lives.

Like all Colgate students, Benton Scholars have control of their course of study, as well as choice of major concentration and activities. The program builds upon the Colgate experience rather than creating a separate track within it.

Those invited to participate in the Benton Scholars Program are students who have demonstrated not only the ability to think and lead, but the passion to make a positive impact on the world. This program will sharpen their skills, ignite new passions, and provide a platform to think globally about what it means to be a leader in the 21st century.
