My daughter is finishing her first year at Colgate, and we're coming up on May 10 to pack-up her dorm room and bring her home. Can somebody who has been through this process tell me how it works? Is it the reverse of move-in day, when everyone parks on the field and campus trucks ferry the students' belongings up the hill to the dorms? Any tips on how to make this day run smoothly? TIA...

Nope, you're on your own. Your D can store her stuff in her freshman dorm or in her new dorm. Everyone generally leaves at different times and since your D is leaving later than most people, I doubt that there'll be a lot of crowding as it was on the first day.

I didn't know that you could store things in the dorm room over the summer, my daughter got together with a few friends and stored most of her stuff in one of those storage locker places for the summer.

And come to think of it, despite being an overprotective dad who drove up with her, went to Walmarts and set up when she started first year, and then visited once or twice after.... she managed the whole leaving/packing/driving home process on her own.

By the time your daughter leaves, you'll be able to drive right up the hill and park in front of the dorm to pack stuff in your car, so it'll be a lot easier process.

There's also Stewart's Country Storage. For $25 or so beyond the storage costs they will pick up everything you want to store and bring it back when you return to Colgate.

My d has used Stewart's and it was great. delivered back to her room just when she asked in the fall. this year she is moving to the sorority house and she can store her things there. Lots of parents come up, lots of kids do it on their own (mine wants us there...)
