Likely letter/acceptance letter

Does Colgate send these out?

Something from Colgate was sent to me today via FedEx (signature required). However I was not at home so I still don't know what they have sent me.

I applied RD, so I should not be hearing from them until April.

BTW I am an international applicant from New Zealand. What could Colgate possibly have sent me?

i received an acceptance letter today in a packet in the mail. not a likely letter but acceptance. i was also selected for alumni memorial scholar and my acceptance letter had a handwritten note from the dean of admissions talking about what i have done which was a nice personal touch.

Wow, this is so great! D got the alumni memorial scholar packet yesterday! Very excited around here. tsalz15, what are you interested in majoring in? D wants biology, with marine concentration. Is Colgate your top pick?
Anybody else out there? (maybe I should learn how to start a thread...)

I guess my question is, were they legacy applicants or is this just the name of a scholarship? Either way, how great to breath that sigh of relief... we could sure use one of those around here!!!

Colgate awards AMS to the top 200 applicants in the applicant pool each year. Typically the AMS students have very high stats. AMS financial aid packages can be more favorable; on top of this and for non financial aid AMS students, there is a one time stipend (up to $5K) which can be used for a study/travel project. There are other programs for AMS students throughout the school year.

Being a legacy applicant is not relevant for AMS - this is just the name of the scholarship.

Congrats to elvito and cadence!

Yeah, I just got my acceptance letter along with the AMS, and I think that's why it came so early. I think for those who did not receive the scholarship, letters will come at the normal time.

Congratulations, you guys! So exciting. We're also waiting to see what happens with some other schools, but honestly, it's hard to imagine anything being better than this offer! Elvito, have you picked up your mail yet?

Oh, I forgot to post stats:

GPA: 3.9 unweighted, something like a 4.5 weighted
school doesn't rank
SAT:
780 M
760 CR
780 W
SAT II:
Chemistry: 620
Math II: 660
Bio M: 780

EC's: lots of theater (though never starring), All-State Chorus, J.E.T.S. (engineering competition), summer marine bio program with S.E.A., currently lab assistant/intern at our local state university, Young Life (Christian youth group) and mentor/leader for middle school branch, figure skating when younger, JV Ultimate (but clearly not recruited for athletics!).

We also have financial need, which may help them meet diversity, because we're not minority. Basically I think it's a combination of her grades/scores, and her focus on career goals. She's been pretty determined in her pursuit of marine science, and I think they like that.
Colgate is an amazing school! We're not legacy, and haven't even had the chance to visit yet, though she met their rep at her HS and liked her very much. So, Wow!

HUGE Kudo's to all!

so I looked this up on Colgate's website as I thought they didn't offer any kind of merit aid, which was exactly what the website says, but then too, I found this under AMS:

Quote:
"Though not a "merit scholarship," the award does recognize academic merit and achievement combined with leadership and accomplishment in top candidates regardless of financial aid status. Selection by the admission staff is based on academic performance, demonstrated talents, and the respect a student has earned from both teachers and counselors. No special application is required. "
If not merit, what the heck is it? It defines merit. Well deserved surely, but why not call it what it is?

It's not merit aid in that AMS students don't receive any non-need based aid toward tuition, etc. AMS do receive a $5K stipend, but that can only be used for a very specific purpose, not to offset the cost of attending Colgate. I think of merit aid as $$ to be applied toward tuition, room and board, etc., awarded without regard to financial need.

But in any event it is a very nice honor!
