Colgate AMS '13

Okay, so I'm trying to start my first thread here! This is for those who have been accepted to Colgate as Alumni Memorial Scholars for the incoming class of Lucky '13! Our D just got one of those lovely packets last week, and we'd love to swap info with other prospectives, like... are you planning to attend? What major are you considering? What activities? Where are you from? ... and other thrilling things. So come on, folks, here you go! You don't want to let me down now, do you?

Well, first off, congrats to your D =)

There's some guy I know who is an AMS - international from Australia, full IB diploma (predicted 44/45, 7 in 7th subject), majoring in geography, I think he's a runner, Asian/Chinese, probably not attending, applied to a ton of Ivies, also accepted to Dartmouth in February.

For the people who were selected to be an AMS, did you apply early decision, either I or II, or did you apply regular and they sent you basically a likely letter saying that you will be accepted as an AMS when regular decisions are released?

Regular decision-acceptance letter which also talked about the AMS thing.

PKW, the applicants awarded AMS received an actual acceptance letter, not a likely letter.

PKW--yes, our D applied RD, and we had no idea this program existed. Colgate accepts around 200 applicants as AMS--and it's an acceptance, but sent early. She has the same deadline (may 1) to accept the offer, just like with the other schools. It's a GREAT package, and we're sooo thankful!

Do you mind if I ask what is so "great" about the package other than being offered a $5000 stipend to do independent research? From what I understand, many AMS participants don't take advantage of that option. What's the great package about???

She got terrific financial aid, all grant, no loan, no work-study. She'd been up for another scholarship track, which didn't materialize (and wasn't as good as this financially), so this is very exciting. And she definitely plans to do the independent research, since she's headed for a bio major and grad school. It also has the aspect of putting these kids in an "extra-attention" category, with activities, time with prof/admins., etc., which seems like a very helpful advantage.
And jsanz, I posted on the other thread, she just has the regular Colgate log-in, which only keeps track of the submitted documents. That may change if/when she accepts--we'll see.
Good luck, all!

As I mentioned in another thread, d is a senior AMS. This year, she received a FA package that for the first time, didn't include a loan. Cadence mentions no loan for her D's offer. This might be a new policy, then for Colgate AMs students, similar to Williams' and Amherst's no-loan FA. Good for AMS kids!

I'm really excited to be accepted AMS, especially since the FA package doesn't include any loans. I also really liked the personal touch of having the Dean of Admissions (i think) write an individual message for me (and everyone else who got the AMS letter).
to answer all of cadence's questions..
- i'm not sure whether i'm going to attend yet- i'm going to wait to see where else I get in before I make any final decisions
-considering majoring in Psychology, Sociology, or Economics- pretty undecided right now
-considering activities like intramural tennis, sorority membership, maybe something like a french club
- from SC, a far cry from Hamilton, NY haha

flyaway- I'm from SC too! where do you live? I talked to a girl over email from Colgate from SC and she only knows a few people from here.

Is AMS based on SAT scores primarily? I'm so jealous y'all are already hearing... I am dying over here having to wait 20 more days!

For you guys who were accepted as AMS, what were some of your other top choices? Colgate is one of my top choices but I'm somewhat disappointed that I have not been admitted as AMS just because I was accepted with an early write admission to Amherst, which isn't my top choice, but is higher ranked. Now I feel like Amherst want me more so I might pick them just because of the early admission. Come decision time, I'm going to go crazy. Also, my sister goes to Colgate and every time I visit her, I just love being on campus. Congrats to all the people who were admitted as AMS, you guys truly deserved it.
