Colgate usually doesn't make admissions stats available for several months after candidates get the decisions back, which I find refreshing in comparison to say, Harvard, which is giddily reporting that they rejected 93% of the applicants this year (instead of 92% last year) before some candidates have even received their letters. With applications to Colgate down this year (as with just about all LACs this year), I would be surprised if the acceptance rate ended up being lower than last year's level. Someone on this site reported that the Middlebury acceptance rate went from 17% to 22% this year, which I also don't know if it's actually true but would be surprised if Colgate ended up being at the same level as Middlebury.

I read that 22% somewhere.. and don't know where. But I wouldn't just make up a figure like that. However, I did talk to a student who works in admissions at Colgate and Midd and both these students said the competition regardless of the numbers was absolutely fierce this year and is why there is such a waitlist thing.
OK.. second: Harvard (dartmouth, yale) can trumpet their numbers all they want. They are offering free tuition for a significant portion of society and absolutely no loans to all of their undergrads who would need them anywhere else. Glad they can afford it, but Harvard seems to be making some fairly substantial cuts to other things, including faculty. Just saying... it's not that their education is so far superior (although admittedly it does have definite cache) it's that more people want free education and so their numbers of applicants once agains shoot through the roof.

I was accepted, but let me just encourage everyone here who is on the waitlist to keep plugging away. First of all, I would suggest getting 1-2 more rec letters from teachers and writing a letter explaining why you want to go and what you have done recently.
Although I was accepted, the cost of Colgate is making it almost impossible for me to attend. I assume many people are in the same situation. As such, I will most likely not be attending and should be declining their offer within the next few weeks. Keep working hard and know that you guys have a great shot at getting it, especially with the economy as it is! A lot of you look extremely qualified as well!

It's official, I will not be attending Colgate next year. I was accepted, declined the offer on April 30, and received a very very nice and thoughtful letter in the mail today wishing me a fantastic four years at my first choice school. I wish you all the best as you wait anxiously to hear back; Colgate is an awesome school with kind and caring faculty and students. I know of a few other people who have declined their spot, so hopefully this brings some good news to the rest of you!

Same with S. He was accepted but declined mostly because FA was not enough. Got a nice letter from them and a request to answer an accepted student survey. Nice school, very helpful admissions staff. I higly recommend it.

^Well, seeings how many people who declined their spot are getting notes from Colgate thanking them for letting them know their intentions, I'm sure by now Colgate has a general idea as to whether or not they will need to use their waitlist. I wouldn't be surprised if you hear some news early this coming week. Good luck!
