What stands out about Colgate?

What made you personally choose Colgate?

Also, regarding class size and professors... what is an average class like? Do prof try and get to know their students, or do you really have to make the initiative?

What kind of students do you find at Colgate generally? Preppy, jocks, artsy..etc.

Colgate students are usually preppy, jocks. They tend to be extremely attractive, and a large proportion comes from Westchester, NJ, and CT.

Profs are at Colgate to teach. If they wanted to do research, for the most part, they wouldn't be at Colgate. Which isn't to say students don't get a chance to research at Colgate. THere are over 150 students doing research this summer. Generally, profs encourage meetings with students, take classes out to dinner, eat in the dining hall, etc.

Colgate stands out as a really academically good school with a good party scene and great athletics.

Since you posted the almost identical question in Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell, Williams, BC, Pomona forums, what is it you're looking for to set these schools apart????

haha, wow you certainly did some research, jk. idk exactly, the whole college process is totally confusing me and idk exactly what i want. i'm hoping that i can get some idea by reading what you guys have to say about the colleges. i want a school thas has a lot of school spirit- both for sports and in general. i want a school where kids are friendly and happy and not overly stressed but still work hard for the sake of learning(not competitive with each other). i want a school where i can have the majority of my classes be small so that i can get to know my prof and i won't just be a "number."

You will not be a number at Colgate. From what I've seen, the work isn't particularly stressful, but I don't know if you'll have many of those famed discussions about philosophy at 2 am. Colgate alums are generally pretty loyal though, if you like that for school spirit. Definitely visit, since LACs aren't for everyone, and different LACs have different atmospheres. Try not to visit during the summer, but if you do, and you have any say about it, try to get a tour guide named Gina or Simon. They are both great people. And definitely go around town too, because the town is also not for everybody.
