What ethnicity to put on application?

Ok, so I am 100% Egyptian. I was born in Egypt and moved to U.S. when I was very young, and I currently have a green card but I am not a citizen. Now I have been told by several people, including one of my teachers, that I can legitimately put down African-American for my college application. I've been told this would help my application, but do you think I could do it? and if not, is there another ethnicity for me to put, or is it just white?

No, Egyptians are not Black. Therefore, you cannot say that you are black on your application. Plus, the Common App asks if you are "Black/African American". You are not black. Egyptians are Arabic, and Arabs are considered to be "White".

So, please don't lie to colleges about this. Please have some integrity.

I believe the Common Application indicates that those of European, Middle Eastern, and North African descent are "White".

This was unnecessary, the OP is simply trying to find out if the entirety of Africans fall into one category, or if it is broken up. There was no suggestion that the OP would lie or not have integrity.

Choice 1: Black or African American (including Africa and Caribbean)

Black *OR* African American
Egypt is in Africa, no?

Choice 2: White (including Middle Eastern)

Middle East is a subchoice for this, too
Egypt is in the Middle East, no?

Choice 3: Check off both maybe

Your parents were born in Egypt. You were born in Egypt. Your putting African American down will not bode well for you. Don't do it.
