I'm not close to my principal but I need a recommendation from him for a scholarship. I don't know if I should ask him at all? What should I do?

If you don't ask, you can't apply for the scholarship. So if you ask him, you have nothing to lose.

Make an appointment to talk to him, bring along a resume and other information pertinent to the scholarship.
