| Does sexuality matter?
I'm wondering if being anything besides heterosexual would be a + in college admissions. It may sound like a dumb question, but colleges look for uniqueness and students that aren't just the norm, obviously it may be seen as some kind of reverse discrimination or whatever, anyway, I was just wondering if sexuality plays any part in college admissions.

Was it Carleton that just started affirmative action for homosexuals? I'm not sure, but yes, at some schools it is a plus. Don't count on it to be your ticket to "uniqueness" though, but it could help.

I'm SUPER shocked to hear this, why doesn't everyone just say they're gay? When would you divulge this kind of information, and more importantly, what schools do you guys have in mind when you say "Yes, at some colleges"?

Carleton? I'm not sure...the thread was flying around here for awhile recently. One of the top LACs has started affirmative action for homosexuals. I wonder how many other schools may feel the same way, even if they don't make AA for gays official policy.

It's not as though any place on the app specifically asks for your orientation, so I am assuming you intend to make it your essay. In that case, I believe it could certainly be fruitful in terms of things to talk about, and that if you were able to convey how it has shaped who you are it could certainly come off as a positive.
The same would apply if you founded a Gay-Straight Alliance at your school, or something like that, and discussed it in your EC essay.
Writing "I'm Gay" in your additional information section, though, I seriously doubt would do you much good.
So, basically, it is like any other aspect of your life that goes into the college admissions process. Would an empassioned essay about being gay be more effective than an empassioned essay about horseback riding? Maybe. Most colleges are liberal, and looking for diversity, in that sense you are right. But ultimately, I think it is more what you make of it than the situation itself, perhaps in contrast with things such as ethnicity or location, which provide a boost based simply on identifying that way.
