| Rice's waitlist is somewhat active. They took seven people:
In April, we requested permission to place your name on the waiting list as an alternate for Rice's class of 2012. We were pleased by your positive response and I am writing to update you on our current situation. Since May 1, seven students have been offered admission from the waiting list, and at present, the class is full.
In our earlier correspondence we indicated that we would close down Rice's waiting list on June 30. As you may have read in the newspaper and other media sources, there is an unusually high number of wait list offers going out from many of our peer institutions. Because of the lack of stability among the nation's most selective schools, Rice has decided to extend the life of the waiting list to July 15.
To update us on your current desire to remain on the waiting list or withdraw from it, please reply online with your login id by May 30, 2008.
Sincerely,
Julie M. Browning
Dean for Undergraduate Enrollment |

| From WSJ article: Quote:
The wait-list bonanza isn't because colleges have more slots available for students -- in fact, overall enrollment levels at many schools remained the same as last year.
Instead, colleges this year faced more uncertainty in the applications process. For one thing, there's a growing population of high-school seniors -- many of whom submit applications to multiple schools. But for highly selective schools, what really affected the process was the move by two Ivy League schools to end their early-admissions programs. Also at play were policy changes that made more financial aid available to middle- and upper-class students.
"It was certainly a year in which there was more uncertainty than I've experienced in over 30 years in admissions," says Bill Fitzsimmons, Harvard's dean of admissions and financial aid.
| The uncertainty led to an abundance of caution at a number of the top schools. As a result, an additional 200 taken from waitlists at harvard & princeton probably resulted 500 more spots opening up at other schools. When H&P, et al, digest the data from this year, much of that uncertainty will be discounted next year. HS class of 09 keep this in mind. Next year won't be as generous in terms of getting off of waitlists. OTOH, more should be gaining outright admission. |
