OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Now that the Common App is out, many questions are arising about the sections, supplements, and everything else. Because almost all of the (college) class of 2012 will be filling out a common application, I think it would be a great idea to have a compilation of questions about the common application.

i'll go first:

Under the "Position Held, Honors Won, or Letters Earned" section in the "Extracurricular, Personal, and Volunteer Activities (including summer)" part, should we still put an award if we alr4eady listed it in the "Academic Honors" part?

If it's an academic honor or award, that's where it belongs. Extracurricular activities etc are separate. However, you should also send the school a complete resume which lists all academic honors, extracurriculars etc. and other relevent info.

Yea, pretty much, I mean if you honestly feel that you have more than seven strong activities then you should attach an extra page, but only do this if you are certain that the extra activites are exceptional and add a new dimension, but I would seriously suggest sticking to the number of entries provided - colleges most certainly don't want a laundry list of activities.

would summer internships [not paid] count as an extra cirricular or work experience [one is at a lab and the other is in the DA's office, if that helps]?

they would count as a work experience. If I'm not mistaken, there is a specific spot in the common application where they ask "What work did you do over the summer". or something like that. Its been a while, but i figure that there is a section specifically asking abouts summer intern. if not, then it counts as work experience.

Under the "Standardized Tests" section for the ACT, under writing, do we put our combined Writing/English score or just the raw Writing score?

another question related to the 2nd post

i won a siemens award for doing scientific research. does that go into academics or activities (maybe both)? it prolly counts as academics but i feel that im leaving a very important extracurricular out if i dont put it in activities as well. on the other hand, it feels redundant to do so.

any suggestions?

What additional sports form? I just put it under the ECs.

This one I think we may need to write in about or something. I'm thinking it's just the raw writing, but then why would the drop down go from 1-36?

If we don't have enough room in the EC section, can we just put the stuff that was left out in the "Additional Info" section?

good thread idea

so we can just put down the highest SAT scores we have, or should we include other takes. I took the SAT twice and the Math IIC twice. should i include the lower scores, or just put the highest of each two.
