Blah, I have so much else to do before I can even think of STARTING mine.

I don't think 629 words is too bad.

not too long...3 days....maybe 3-4 hours total. But if you write about something you're passionate about it shouldn't take long because the words just come.

Of course I'll be coming back to it everyday to tweak it, but for the most part its done

does it specify how many words? If it does, you really shouldn't be over by more than 10-15.

Cut it down to at least 550.

I cut mine from 750 --> exactly 500.

I'd try to trim it down to below 600 personally... if not for the word count, do it for trying to make it more succint/ to the point.
Congrats on being done so early though!

I finished mine 2 months ago... only because my school mandates that the common app essay be done before the end of junior year...

My essay was originally 650 words, but when I looked over it a month after the first draft was done, I absolutely hated it and shaved it down to 450. If it helps for you, give it some time and come back to it later.

some colleges really nail you on the word count, and may even specify that they will penalize you for excessive writing on their webpage. So i would really try and trim it down.

Mine was ~440, I wouldn't worry about word count that much. Write enough so that you express your vision very well without any gaps in logic/reasoning, but don't ramble in the thinking that more is better up to the cap.
