I am a rising high school senior from Massachusetts who is completing my last two years of high school by taking a full college course load at Harvard University’s Extension School, where instead of a high school diploma, I may receive an A.A. I intend to apply to colleges in the fall as an entering freshman (2008).

My first year of high school was completed at a very competitive public high school (which I believe is well-known to many top colleges) where I took the maximum number of honor courses. In my second year I attended a well-respected arts conservatory (for ballet) with a very good college preparatory program.

Does one know if public and private high schools rank students each year and if they do, is the rank reflected on the transcript?

This important to me because, while I'll have an excellent GPA from Harvard Extension in college courses, I won't have a class rank. I did very well my first two years of high school, among the top 5 freshman year and, I believe, I was number 1 my sophomore year.

Also, I won a number of departmental prizes in a range of honors courses in both years of high school (Math, Bio, Chemisty, English and Spanish). Will these be reflected on my transcripts.

As far as I am aware, public high schools rank students each year. However the rank for the individual student changes each year. I do not imagine your freshman/first year of high school will be on any sort of transcript. For the senior year, it is that final ranking that counts.

I believe that some private schools rank, and some do not. It is no matter if yours does or not; it will not affect admissions. That is why there is the GPA I suppose, the college can keep track of your academic standing that way.

Awards will not be on your transcript, or so I believe. My transcript has a list of classes I have taken for high school credit, the grade I received in each of them, my weighted and unweighted GPA, and my class ranking.

My public high school doesn't rank and it didn't seem to cause a problem (11 to Stanford, 6 to Harvard, 3 to Princeton, 2 to Yale last year)

Some schools (and counties) rank and others do not. In my county, I don't think any public schools rank (graduating classes between 550 and 750 students) and my private school (graduating class of fifty) does not.

My school does not rank and we send many kids to ivy league + schools each year plus many other top schools. They do not rank because our class is so small (90 kids) and so strong (probably number 85 could do the work at any school).

op- a good chunk of schools don't rank their students (for whatever reasons). You not having a rank won't affect admissions either way.
