which teacher should I choose?
A) AP english teacher (I asked for a rec last year), I got an A in the class but there was definitely smarter kids, she would be a great writer, don't really know what she thinks of me, only got a 3 on the exam
B)foreign language teacher I've had for 3 years, always got A+s(no honors level available), not the hardest class though, not many bright kids in the class, he likes me well

I am an international student . My school does not have a counselor currently . I need to explain to the AdComs the reason my grades dipped during Grade 11 and Since I do not have a counselor , my class teacher who knows me from 4 years has agreed to write a letter . Since she is not good with English or any writing skills , she has told me to write a letter and the she will read it and sign it only if she approves of it .

This letter is the only chance of me getting in to a good college and only a very good letter would convince the adcoms to give me a second chance .

I have a tremendous upward trend in my grade 12 .

The reasons for poor grades were a mixture of : -

1)Sister's marriage
2)Grandmother's death
3)Chicken pox
4)Grade Deflation

To prove all this I only have an attendance rate of 68% .

Can someone write it for me ? . I really need help from you people (please don;t say NO , as I am counting on you people !)

Unweighted GPA - 3.06 (Grades 9-11)

Grades -

Grade 9 :-
English - A-
Hindi - A+
Maths - A-
Science with practicals - A+
Social science - A+

Grade 10 :-
English - B-
Hindi - B+
Maths - B+
Science with practicals - A+
Social science - B+

Grade 11 :-
English - B-
Maths - D+
Physics - C+
Chemistry - D+
Economics - B-

Grade 12 (worked my ass off , all A+ in mid term exams ) :-
English - A+
Maths - A+
Physics with practical - A+
Chemistry with practical - A+
Economics - A+

E.C - Prefect Grade 11 , Did 50 hrs community service , computer club , vice captain badminton team , a few debate competitions , Model United nations , a disciplined and well behaved student .

It would be really helpful if some one would help me out !

Do you fill in the cover letter online and print it out? or do you print it out and then fill it in by hand?

It it necessary to choose recent teachers for letters of rec?

I'm applying ED to Columbia and all it says is that the teachers have to have taught you in an academic discipline... it doesn't specify when. So theoretically could I ask my english teacher from 9th & 10th grade to write my rec? I get good grades in my current teachers class but I just don't have the same connection with him.

What information should we provide the teachers we ask?

How do we know when the deadline is? Is the deadline for teacher recs the deadline date of the college application?

Ok so basically,you
1.Download the Eval forms
2.Fill in the top part? (Print it out and fill it by pen? or fill it on the comp?)
3.Print the Eval forms
4.Give them to the required no of teachers along with your Resume, cover letter,stamped/addressed envelope (how many envelopes do we give to one teacher? I'm applying to 10 colleges. So do I give each teacher 10 envelopes stamped with that specific college's address?)

Hi there, my first post on CC.

I'd to clarify a major doubt about the admissions process that i have.

On the CommonApp as well as other independent online applications of other unis (UMICH) it allows you to provide the email to your recommender (counsellor and teacher) online and then after that you get notified via email when they submit it. However, on another part of the application it says that i need to print out some forms (CommonApp and U-M) to give to my teachers/counsellor and provide them with the envelopes, mailing address, stamps etc.

My question is: is it the same thing? Just a matter of choice between online submission or snail mail? That means if i already have teachers who have submitted their recommendations online with a notification email telling me so, then i don't have to worry about all the printing these forms and providing envelopes, stamps etc business?

PLEASE clarify my misconceptions!! Thanks in advance.

EDIT: like what ishi92 above me said about downloading Evaluation forms, filling it out and giving it to teachers. Is it the same as me submitting their email addresses for them to complete online? Or is it something different

Need opinions on this one: would it be good to get instead of two recs from profs, one from a prof and one from the headmaster of the school? Or maybe I should get two from profs and plus one from headmaster? Is it even a good idea to have a rec from the headmaster or should I just stick to profs only?

My teachers just sent out their letter of recs for me this week.
When do I write them thank you notes? I know I need to after I find out what schools I get to in the Spring but I feel like I should by the end of this week too. If I do, what do I say besides a "thank you" since there is nothing to keep them posted on.

You could just say thank you since they did help you out and write you a rec and mention somewhere in the letter that you'll make sure to let them know the outcome of your efforts. Because I think waiting to thank them until the spring is too long, its better to thank them as soon as they've written the recs for you.

Hey guys, I'm an international student.

I don't think my teachers are used to writing recommendations for universities because it's not needed for the universities in my country.

Do you guys think it's better for me to first send an email asking them whether they would want to be my reference for U.S. universities before asking them face to face and handing them the recommendation forms?
