Common App- Writing Samples

The Common Application says that if I want to elaborate on one of my personal activities, I can do so in the writing samples section.

Is this elaboration supposed to be in essay format or can it simply be a list of activities and awards?

Also, am I only allowed to expand on one activity? Can't I mention others?

Thanks,
(and sorry if this question has been asked before!)

I'm pretty sure volunteer stuff is supposed to go with the other extracurricular activities.
