SAT IIs/APs During Admission

How are SAT IIs and AP exams evaluate during admissions? What are they used for?
Do you help cover up bad individual grades in the subjects?
Can they help you get admitted?

SAT 2's are required for a bunch of places and almost as important as the SATs

AP's are an added bonus, and they could show that there's no grade inflation on your report card if you do well on them, but AP's are more of a bonus rather than a neccesity

of course, not all schools offer APs/IBs and students from all schools are required to have an equal chance..

while SAT IIs are open to everyone...
