UC applications surge

The University of California reported record numbers of applications for Fall 2008.
UCLA: 70,328
UC Berkeley: 60,709
UC San Diego: 57,116
UC Santa Barbara: 55,871
UC Irvine: 51,935
UC Davis: 48,653
UC Merced: 10,180
This represents a 58 percent increase in the number of applications from 10 years ago.
I wonder how any admissions office can manage volume like that!

Wow....That alone is a huge jump for all schools?

Berkeley had 25000 apps last year? Upto 60k this year? God damn. WHat do you mean 58% in 10 years, that's more than 100% in one year lol.

UC Berkeley for Fall 2006: 41,695
UC Berkeley for Fall 2007: 44,077
UC Berkeley for Fall 2008: 48,418
(Note that these are number for freshman applicants only...this does not include transfer applications!)
I've realized that I left out UC Santa Cruz for Fall 2008: 27,810

The numbers are with transfer students. BTW Berkeley had 44,077 freshman apps last year.

You can look at complete table here:

Check out the African American/URM applicants to UC Santa Barbara and Davis!
Another interesting chart.

( Sorry... my own special interest group... very exciting to think these schools might get past three percent!)

But the UC schools banned affirmative action....so even though there are more minorities applying, that doesn't necessarily mean the numbers will go up? sorry, confused lol...

Not neccesarily, but the odds are better with a larger applicant pool.

I remember seeing a video somewhere (it was a 60 Minutes/2020 type report) on Berkeley admissions; in one segment they actually showed the adcom debating different candidates while mentioning their strengths and weaknesses.

Anyways, I remember a message from the video (forgot whether it was explicitly stated) that even though CA banned AA, they sometimes will still give nudges to people based on ethnicity/background.

What Ivinshe said is very true.

My brother went through this whole system and he learned a lot when he went to Berkeley about AA. Basically that essay they ask applicants to write "Tell us where you come from" is open ended for all the minorities to say "I am black/latino, and I am not as fortunate as the white applicants, please accept me."
