Can anyone fill me in on Boys/Girls State?

Back in the dark ages (early '80s) I think I remember hearing about a boy and girl from my HS who attended. They were high achievers, but not necessarily over achievers.

So, what is it? Does it help a college app? Or, is it the ancient history equivalent of all the "National Leadership" "Congressional Leadership" experiences available if you can pay the price?

My son went to Boys State. He did it for fun, but it probably helped somewhat as an activity as it fit with his interests. He was elected to a leadership position there so listed that as part of his description on his Common App as well as on scholarship applications. He had to fill out an application for Boys State including essays which was submitted to the local American Legion. They picked two boys from among the applications they received. Boys/Girls State are definitely better than programs which you pay for. You have to be selected to attend and there is no fee. He even received money to pay for travel expenses from our local post.

My son also attended and found it a very worthwhile program. I don't know if it helped in his admissions but it certainly didn't hurt. He really enjoyed doing it. All of his expenses were covered as well.

i agree with shennie. my son went to boys state, my sister went to girls state. for both it was an honor, a valuable experience, and i suspect it did not hurt their selection into some very fine LAC's.

My Son is at Boy's State now. In some states it is a huge honor and in others "not so much" but it is an honor. Because it is selective it looks good on any application. If you are selected to attend Boys Nation than it becomes a very big honor. But it is a good way to explore how state gov works and try your wings at getting elected.
