UMass-Amherst VS. UMass-Boston

Which is better? UMass-Amherst is slightly higher ranked but UMass-Boston has a better location.

Amherst is a residential college whereas Boston has no dorms - strictly a commuter school. While the education may be similar at the two schools, the "college experience" you get will be entirely different.

Because it is the flagship, UMASS-Amherst is known to attract better professors, also in my area, Amherst is much more widely-respected, while Boston is thought to be the worst UMASS.

UMass Amherst is also part of the five college consortium, meaning you can also take classes at Amherst College, Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire, all wonderful schools. The Amherst area has thousands of college students and an amazing downtown area... it's smaller than Boston, but offers up a great location.

But Amherst is a small isolated town. There is much more opportunity and things to do in Boston. Over 300 colleges in Boston. While, Amherst may be a residential college, many students still commute there. Can you explain why Boston is considered the worst UMass? I would thought it would be first or at least second best because of its location.

And what does flagship mean?

This what I mean. People keep saying "UMass-Amherst is much better than UMass-Boston". But don't all the UMass schools offer similar quality education? And Amherst is very isolated and rural compared to Boston. So I don't see why Boston isn't as good?

Where are you from? That might help people to better explain things to you. UMASS's are far from being the same. Flagships are basically the best csampus in the state. For example, in North Carolina Chapel Hill is the flagship. Location in no way affects academic quality or reputation of a school (at least when there is that little difference in location, and that big of a difference in quality). If UMASS's were the same, for instance, they would be equally easy to get into.

Sorry this post is a little jumbled.

Living near UMass-Boston and having applied to UMass-Amherst, I would DEFINITELY choose Amherst over Boston. UMass-Boston is a commuter school, and is known, IMHO, as a school for working adults trying to get degrees, or immigrants. Amherst is much more prestigious and well-known. On the U.S. News and World Report, Amherst is one of the top 100 colleges; Boston is third-tier.

thanks for the info

I live near UMass-Boston and wondered why people say UMass-Amherst is better? Also why is being a commuter school a bad thing? Many people commute and there is off-campus housing for others. And it seem there is much more to do in Boston compared to Amherst.

What are the rankings for the best UMass Campuses?

Is it
1. UMass Amherst
2. UMass Boston
3. UMass Lowell
4. UMass Dartmouth ?
