What is considered a "good" AMC 12 score that would impress an adcom?

I don't know, I believe the average is around 2, so I would think that a score of 5 or 6 or above would look pretty good.

    Yea, I was talking about the AIME. I got a 118 ( :( ) on the AMC 12 and a 6 on the AIME.
    Congrats on those scores PoloniusMouth!

6 is an excellent score on the AIME! Top 5-10% of AMC takers, depending on year.

Thanks, texas. Hmmm if I recall correctly, it was YOU who told me about the exam 2 or so years ago, when I was looking for some math competitions. Thanks!
Yea I was happy with my 6, but disappointed in my stupid mistakes on the AMC---for example, for how many numbers is it true that a^2 = a. thats what one of the problems boiled down to. and i put 1---because I only thought about the number 0, I forgot about 1.
Ehh, whatever, it was still really fun.

hahaha - I'm glad to hear you've had fun! I think math contests are a lot of fun, but it's easy to make stupid mistakes given the time constraints. The 6 on the AIME is much more impressive, and probably reflects your ability more than the AMC score of 112. If you apply to MIT or Caltech, there will be a place right on the app for your scores, and the AIME score will definitely help you.

What percentile do you need to get on the AMC 12 in order to be able to take the AIME? Wouldn't just qualifying for the AIME be impressive to colleges?

top 5% or score over 100.

Anyone who qualifies for the AIME should mention it. But if you only score a 1-2, I don't think I'd mention that.

AMC12 just needs an absolute score: 100/150 to move on.

I doubt that qualifying for AIME is enough to impress top colleges (i.e., Caltech, MIT), where just about everyone qualifies

I was happy with my 7 on AIME...then I met my Caltech Prefrosh Weekend host, who got a 14 once...

In recent years the 100 score cut-off qualified more than 5%, so they used the 100. But if scores were unusually low one year (as they have been in the past on the old AHSME which AMC12 replaced), they will go below 100 to take at least 5%

I think AIME scores start to get the attention of adcoms at places like MIT/Caltech at about 6 (most years that has been roughly top 5% of AIME takers, and close to or qualifying for USAMO.)

    Yowza!....a 14...did you bow before him/her? ;)
Yea I think 6+ is a score that's set to impress, anything below a 4 might work against you, at least for MIT/Caltech/RPI type schools. Btw texas I just graduated so I'm already going to college---happily entering Claremont McKenna this fall :)
    Hahaha

ARen't the indices for USAMO qualification pretty high?
Wouldn't you need like a 120+ on the AMC and a 10+ on the AIME?
