Hey all, I tried searching through the forums for a topic on this but I couldnt find one right away, so I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed already...

the question is this: Will putting 'Undecided" as my major hurt me in any way? I know some friends who are putting more 'obscure' majors in order to make them more attractive to universities. Do you think that's a good tactic? Or should I just stay undecided. I wish there was an option that said "definetly not going into hard sciences. studying humanities/social sciences."

any advice is appreciated!

No, it does not help to put an uncommon major if the rest of your application does not support it well.

But yes, this question has been answered several times, and it would advisable for you to search a bit before posting such a question.

With the knowledge that you're interested in a difficult major to get into, would it be unethical to apply to a school Undecided then declare your chosen major after a semester or two?

^When you say undecided, the school accepts the fact that you might go for an easy major or a harder one to get into later. No big deal.

People change majors all the time. You're 17/18 years old; IMO, if you all know exactly what you want to do the rest of your lives, that's a scary thought.

meadow is right, your friends can put down (for example) Classics as an intended major, but unless they have the coursework, ECs, etc. to support that claim, it's worthless, or possibly even negative if it's too obvious that they're just trying to game the system.
