retaking failed classes for high school diploma

i failed three classes senior year. 2 core classes and 1 elective. i took 1 core class in the summer and 1 core and 1 elective in the fall. i passed both my core classes but failed the elective.

at this point... is it impossible for me to get my high school diploma? i spoke to different people and said that:
1. i can retake the elective anytime since it doesnt matter as much as the core class
2. i have until the end of the school year, not the end of 2009 to retake it.

of course i need to talk to a counselor which is what im going to do once break is over, i'd just like your input on the probability of getting my diploma..

thanks,
