National Merit Semifinalist

Do I have to send an official "college choice" report to each college I apply to? Or can I just put it on my app? How do they verify who's national merit and who's not?

What's the official "college choice report" that you are talking about? Do you mean the notification that you send in to NMSC regarding your "first choice" school (to qualify for the college-sponsored NM scholarships)? You don't even need to send that in until you know where you're going -- you can stay "undecided" until sometime in April or May.

My son has been listing "National Merit Semi-Finalist" under the Academic Awards/ Honors section on his college applications. I don't think any school is actually going to bother to verify it -- any more than they would verify that you won a prize at a science fair or a music competition. (Although I suspect most colleges probably have the MN Semi-Finalist mailing list and could verify if they wanted to.) Besides, you usually have to sign a pledge that you have been truthful in filling out the forms.
