Too Preppy???

Hey im a rising HS senior who's looking at CofC as a posible "safety"-ish school. I really like the town and what ive seen of the campus. I heard from somebody who knows a current student that CofC is really preppy. I am not a preppy person. Im more of a hackey sackin intellectual. I guess my real question is "What portion of the student body is rich/white/collared shirt/bmw/greek/ ect?" Please be honest. I really dont wanna hear "oh, well everyone is accepted here" or anything like that. Id really just like an honest assesment of the student body.

well thanks

No, not everyone is accepted there. Sorry. I got in by the skins of my teeth. I live in Charleston... yes it's a very preppy school. I don't suggest it if you can't put up with those kinds of people. It's kind of the THING here

I read this out of The Best 366 Colleges:
"The typical guy here wears a polo and plaid shorts"
"The typical girl is a blonde with a set of pearls"

I think I am in the same boat as lazydog. Saftey to Fit school and would not mind going there as a last resort...but the student body is just like high school.

Maybe too late but interesting to note: Of all South Carolina colleges and universities, C of C is the most arty, most "hippy," least preppy of the lot. It's located in the most liberal town in the state. It's the only school in SC my long-haired, bearded S would consider applying to. Its building are scattered around the downtown area--very "vibrate" art and music scene. Within the state, it is not viewed as "preppy" but "arty.'

I would definitely have to agree with the above poster on all accounts

I am a Soph at C of C and I had the same reservations about the "preppy" stuff written in the guide books. I even had that same vibe when I visited campus.

HOWEVER, after living and breathing CofC for the past year, I can definitely say that my thoughts have changed significantly. It really depends on who you hang with. The kids in the frats and sororities are preppy, but that's to be expected. But, the student pop. as a whole is not like that. Many many artsy, non-conformists and theatre kids are a noticeable. The out of staters like myself are not considered preppy. I guess the sentiment that I'll leave ya'll with is that it comes down to who you choose to be friends. Although its seems to have become trite, in my experience at CofC, there are groups for everybody. It all comes down to taking the initiative and finding those people. If anybody has any more ???s about CofC, PM me and I'll try to get back to ya in a reasonable time.
