Desktop AND Laptop

I'm fortunate enough to own both a desktop and a laptop. Would it be a bad idea to bring both to college? The desktop is a Mac and the laptop is a PC.

I personally would...but, that's more because I'm extremely into computers and would be deffinatley using it for something, whether it's doing something in the background all day or i'm using it to work on a variety of things along with my laptop at the same time.

However, if you really don't need it or don't have a strong desire to bring it, I'd leave it at home.

I wouldn't...moving a heavy desktop into the dorm will suck, especially if you're not on the first floor and the elevator should happen to be broken (happened to a friend of mine...she had to lug all her stuff up four flights of stairs).

The desktop is an iMac, which is effectively just a monitor (harddrive, CPU, etc. built inside), so it's not heavy at all.

I say the problem with that is its a space hog. At least with a tower-like computer you can have a small LCD and stick the tower/computer under the bed or somewhere more convinent. A big imac is going to take away all your desk space.

Anyway, if you have a reason to bring it, bring it. If you don't, don't. those dorm rooms are small :S

Is it common for students to bring a desktop for gaming and a laptop for everything else? Would this be weird?

Well, it depends. If your college supports Macs, I say go for it; it's handy to have a spare computer, the desktop will be more comfortable to use for longer periods of time, and why not get use out of it?

Is it a CRT iMac or a flat panel iMac? One is feasible, the other is not worth it.

At college, I have both a desktop and a laptop. It's nice in a sense to not be forced to always have to set up my laptop when I'm in my room, and I basically use my laptop to study with friends or go to the library. If you want to, you could set up a "docking station", for and easier time using the computer when you in the room.
