It seems as though the laptops for apple were not updated so I'm wondering, should I wait till August to get a college laptop when the new Intel chips come out????
Intel delayed Centrino II. Nothing Apple could have done about that. Nothing wrong with the current Penryn models either. You can always wait for the next technology. I saw benches this weekend on Nehalem with 50% better IPC compared to Penryn. Nehalem is going to be a performance monster. But you'll have to wait until 2009 for that one.
Intel is supposed to ship July 14 to manufacturers. Then it's however long it takes them to get their processes up and running for validation and manufacture. It's hard to get a read on when Apple will launch a new product outside of WWDC and AppleWorld.
Intel's Centrino II launch is July 14, but Intel has warned that not all versions will be available then; some will launch in August, some even later than that. Given that one of the reasons for the delay was a glitch with the integrated graphics chipsets it is reasonable to assume that it will be one of the August or later releases. That means that MacBook updates are unlikely before then.
MacBook Pros have a separate video card and so, given Apples tendancy to update products on Tuesdays it is possible we could see updated MacBook Pros as early as Tuesday July 15. Then again the cynic in me notes that Apple's current back to school promotion ends on Monday September 15, so who knows what Tuesday September 16 could bring?
Bottom line: other than later than July 14, it's Apple so who knows?
