So far these two years with my Mac have been nothing but flawlessness. Seriously, I don't have any cons with using it a school.

Con: people will think you have a mob mentality because you bought a mac

1) because everyone else has one and
2) because it's "shiny"

Dunno if it's just me.. but ever since i got my mac 3 years ago. it's still running well. No virus bogging me down or anything.. on the other hand.. my sister's window's based laptop.. only 1 year old.. has seen significant slowdown and problems.

Leopard FTW.

^Pretty much.

the only reason my sister's Lenovo is so slow is because she downloads all kinds of crap onto it.

I have some beef with Apple because of...

*Well, I dont like proprietary hardware, I like options.

*A lot of Mac users look at PC users like they are less than human...which is why PC users pick on them.

*Steve Jobs puts toooo much culture into their products. An entire year before Apple discussed its partnership with Starbucks, I predicted that they would have something going. Now all that has to happen is Gap jumps on the bandwagon.

*You are pretty much obligated to get Apple Care because Apple uses proprietary hardware. If Ram goes in your iMac, you don't have a computer for a long time.

*Apple has the same monopoly on hard disk music players as Microsoft has on operating systems, and no one says a damn thing about it.

I don't hate Apple, but I just hate people who defend them tooth and nail when they are A) Not tech people. One girl told me OSX was better because she liked the shortcuts more.....yea. B) They live in that "Apple Culture". The people who drink Starbucks and wear Gap clothes with thick glasses. Typical hipsters.

I personally don't consider the Gap to be the pinnacle of cultured fashion. I am certainly no fashionista, though.

Well...RAM in macs is not only made by Apple, you can buy and put in the RAM yourself.

and Apple does not have a monopoly on hard disk players, there are tones of options, the ipod is just the best selling one.

Sounds a lot like the iPod to me.

really?

Perhaphs you didn't read the part where it says "exclusive control" or "makes possible the manipulation of prices". That alludes to the idea of no competition or no alternatives. Sure, the alternatives might be inferior goods for some, but they still exist. The ipod does not control prices for mp3 players. If the zune 80gb was offered at $150 as opposed to the current $250, you better bet the ipod price would drop.

This is similar to the reason as to why google is not considered a monopoly (yet). Although it dominates the market, there are viable alternatives such as yahoo which still attract hundreds of millions of people yearly. I'm not really sure how the yahoo/google deal will work out though, seems to me that its just an expansion of google reach as opposed to yahoo?

And I also don't know if in this case a monopoly is as bad as it sounds. You have to realize that apple is selling hardware that will last for years. Its not a service which they force people to pay for continually. That means that apple has to continue innovation regardless of their market position in order to keep selling hardware. Its run into this problem lately as the market for new ipods has diminished since many people already have old ipods. Plus, since ipods aren't a necessary good, supply/demand still applies. I'm not sure apple could manipulate prices to extremes, say $500 for an 80gb ipod and still expect people to buy. Anyone else want to comment on this?

Please don't just randomly start hating. btw, I also hate ipods and think they are pos, but I won't mind getting the touch for free in the student deal

We're not saying the Macs are bad. They're perfectly fine computers, but they're also overpriced and definitely NOT worth it for other reasons as well (all listed above). You can get a 2x better computer with the same price if you get a PC...
