Why do college students drink so much? :(

Ok.......I've been thinking alot and alot about this, and I just decided to post it since I cannot get it out of my head and I cannot fall asleep.......:(

So the day before yesterday, I coincidentally found a facebook page of a "friend" I used to know...I lost contact with her after high school, and I was really surprised to see how much she has changed...with alcohol that is..........

She posted pictures of whiskey, which were lined up like a bar setting, that she have collected in her dorm room over the semester.........
I was really shocked to see this because back when I knew her, she was such a tomboy who only talked about stuff like soccer, school, etc. Now she has turned into some girl I would never even recognize--someone who drinks for amusement...

Then as if that wasn't surprising enough, I found the facebook page of a guy I used to like in her friends list, who was always shy and had straight A's, a "good" kid (didn't wear huge glasses or anything though lol), with pictures of him drinking too much in college...
NEVER in my life seen the color RED on someone's face--I never knew that was even possible! I don't know what happened in high school, but just with the grades he achieved thru middle school, I really thought that he was going to go to an Ivy league, rather than a party school (he probably knew what he was getting himself into though)...but now he goes to parties and drinks on every occasion and raises money to drink with his friends...which was so shocking............

Anyway, I'm just really shocked as to how people can change SO MUCH. I mean, first of all, why do people even drink and why do they feel the need to drink? I just do not understand...I guess some people drink because others do and to socialize but why can't you do all that without drinking? Is it that impossible to socialize with others without drinking? I'm not making a generalization because everybody is different, but I see so many people who have pictures of people drinking on facebook as if they are so proud of that act and it's just... ***

I'm also a college student who tries to ignore students' drinking in order to not disturb the peace that lies within accepting differences of students with different beliefs, but sometimes I just wonder and really want to ask people a simple question--WHY?

I'm just really shocked right now especially because this is in regards to people I "thought" I knew that's all...

Why do college students drink so much?
    (1) They find the effects fun or otherwise enjoyable.

    (2) Now living on their own, in a more independent state, they rid themselves of many inhibitions, seeing themselves as "free", before they gain the corresponding responsibilities. If something was discouraged while they were in high school (by their parents, school, et cetera), it may make them more likely to partake in it in college, depending on the person.

Yea That's exactly what I was thinking--most of the students feel "free" to do whatever they want with no supervision, which increases in superficial acts...........

Personally, I think it's kind of a "acting cool" thing, meaning that it looks badass if you drink and tell other people stories of getting drunk and doing ****. I've been to parties before, and since I'm Muslim, I don't drink. At those parties, when people offer me drinks, I decline and tell them why, and then they ask me why I'm here. It's not like the minute people turn 21, they go out and drink every day. I remember talking to a friend the day after a party, and he was telling me about how he hates alcohol because it makes him feel bad and sick, and how he's not gonna drink again. Sorry, I strayed from the question, but what I'm saying is that I think people drink just to be cool. That's my opinion, though.

It's an act of rebellion before they have to obey the man.

Thanks for your input guys... I completely agree--some people drink thinking that it's an act of achieving coolness, which I find that they are going straight to the road of being obnoxious... I just don't understand why they have to throw drinking into the mix... seriously, can't you just have a good time without drinking at all??? This guy was telling me how he and his friends drank SO MUCH over the weekend, and I was completely baffled...all I wanted to say was, WHY do you do that to yourself??? WHY???????? lol

Okay here's my question-why do people think that drinking makes you a different person? Just because your friend drinks doesn't mean he can't still get good grades. In fact, I know a lot of people who party a lot and still have great GPAs. And just because your other friend "drinks for amusement" you think you couldn't even recognize her? People drink to have fun, you do other things to have fun. It's not that big of deal, so stop being so judgmental.

If my college roommate drinks in front of me, one of us will be dead, and it won't be me...

I don't get the rationale that to have fun you need to drink. You must me a pretty boring person if you need to consume a chemical that reduces inhibition before you have fun or are fun to be around.

    That's a pretty big assumption

All you condescending people, have you ever had drinks socially with friends before? If you have, it's not hard to see why people do it.

I didn't know the DARE program had a college forum intern. This thread is absurd.
