What does Vengeance mean?

Does it mean abnegation or revenge or both? Here's the dictionary definition: punishment inflicted in retaliation for an injury or offense.

Does it mean punishment that person 1 inflicts to person 2 for something that person 2 did to person 1?

Can it also mean punishment that person 1 inflicts to person 1 for something that they did wrong?

I'm really not sure what it means. :/

Ah, vengeance. Vengeance means the punishing of someone for harming you or your friends or family, or the desire for such punishment to occur.
Hope this clears a better comprehension of the term.

Heh, in my english course recently, we had to write an essay about the difference between revenge and vengeance. Oh, my memory is poor... so sorry Ashley.

I feel like with vengeance, you're trying to make things equal, while with revenge, you're trying to get back at someone.

Revenge- You ruined my birthday, so I'm going to TP your house.
Vengeance- You killed my mother, so I'm going to kill you.

nothing. I've just never heard of anyone who had, so according to internet law that means that studies have proven that girls do not read xkcd.
