Can scholarship competition organizers evade paying the competition money?

I spent months on a certain scholarship award competition and I did great. So during the competition period the organizers will constantly email me saying your work is so great and keep up the work good work and all that. The competition has been over more than a month now, and there has been no news regarding the results. I e-mailed the organizers several times last week and no one answered me back.
I spent a lot of time on this from doing research, preparing presentation papers to power point stuff. The competition is organized by a private college.
I am worried now that the people are screwing me up (:
Am I worrying unnecessarily?
