superficial... how could anyone interpret your post when you just took a shot at rap in general. no where did you reference tupac, or lil wayne for that matter.

and azs what makes you the "true" rap fan lol? because you think so?

Jay-Z will continue to dish out better lyrics and top the charts in the years to come.
jay, if you didn't know they called him that too, will not top the charts in years to come. i am a true rap fan. don't tell me i'm not... seriously.

Everyone keeps saying that Lil Wayne is the best because many people listen to him. I'm sure people said the same thing about Vanilla Ice at one point. So, how do we judge best rapper? Is it the one who has the best beats, most creative lyrics, most meaningful lyrics?

Most rap critics assess rappers based on lyrics. Hence, the credibility of Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and other rappers who are "socially conscious" (they hate that label). On the other hand, the population judges rappers based on their reputation and beats (and sometimes lyrics as in the case of Eminem). I mean, look at 50 Cent, Kanye, Jay-Z, Outkast, and Lil Wayne. Some of them have lyrics that are OK, but most are popular because of their beats, that's it.

And, a lot of times, good beats require dumb lyrics. At one point, one of my favorite rap groups was Black Eyed Peas. Their first two albums, "Behind the Front" and "Bridging the Gap" had some of the best lyrics I had heard. But, to make these, they sacrificed popularity...so, they used the formula:

GOOD BEATS + ANY LYRICS = HIT

i think his problem is, is that he comes out with Too much songs. If any of you guys ever listened to any one of his mixtapes, and i mean the whole thing not a song or two, youll see that most of his songs on mixtapes are complete garbage. Hell come out with a mixtape that has 15 songs and of those 15 maybe 2 would be good, while the rest would be complete garbage. I mean he can at least make some of the other songs decent, its like he doesnt try on most of the songs on a mixtape except for 2 or 1 of them

From Roc Boys:

First of all I wanna thank my connect
The most important person with all due respect
Thanks to the duffle bag the brown paper bag
The nike shoe box for holding all this cash
Boys in blue who put greed before the badge
The first pusher who ever made the stash
The roc boys in the building tonight
Oh what a feeling I'm feeling life
Thanks to the lames niggas with bad aim
Thanks to a little change I'll tear you out the game
Bullet wounds'll stop your bufoonery
Thanks to the paster rapping at your eulogy
To little kim and them you know the women friend who
Carry the work cross state for a gentleman
Yea, thanks to all the hustlers, and most important to you, the customer

(Chorus)
The roc boys in the building tonight
Oh what a feeling I'm feeling life
You dont even gotta bring your paper out
We the dope boys of the year drinks is on the house {we in the house}
The roc boys in the building tonight
Look at how i'm chillen im killing this ice
You dont even gotta bring your purses out
We the dope boys of the year drinks is on the house {we in the house 2x}

Let your hair down baby, I just hit a score
Pick any place on the planet, pick a shore
Take what forbes figured then figure more
Cause they forgot to account what I did with the fraud
Pick a time lets pick apart some stores
Pick a weekend for freaking for finger force
I figure frauds never hit a lick before
So they dont know the feeling when them things get across
Put your hand out the window, feel the force
Feel the porsche, hit the frost
Ice cold, jewels got no flaws
Drop got no top, you on the top floor
Pink rosae, think O.J. I get away with murder when I sling yay
Heron got less steps then britney that means it aint stepped on digg me

Rare porsches, rare portraits, rare guns if you dare come near the fortress
With apple sauces from the apple orchard
This kind of talk is only reserved for the bosses
Which means I get it from the ground
Which means you get it when i'm around
Rich niggas, black bar-mitzvahs, Mazel Tov its a celebration *****es,
L'Chayim I wish for you a hundred years of success but it's my time
Cheers, toast to crime number one d-boy dahm he could rhyme

Lil Wayne has mass appeal. It may be his "swagger", unique flow, or ability to make nonsense make sense. Probably a combination of those characteristics. Everyone wants a Wayne verse on their album. His lyrics are hit or miss ("I'm hot like light"?????), but usually says something ridiculous that keeps me listening. It's great that he consistently puts out new music. I enjoy his music, but I don't think he is the best rapper alive.

I think the two best mainstream rappers in recent years are Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco. I can listen to American Gangster and The Cool straight through without skipping tracks. Their flow and lyrics are always on point. Jay-Z is definitely not a conscious rapper, but I like how he can rap about some generic subject matter and still make it interesting, somewhat reminiscent of Biggie. Lupe has arguably the best flow in the game and comes up with great concepts. I can always listen to those two.

AKittka,

If you believe Jay's not hitting the charts in the future (for reals...), I can, without a doubt, say that you are NOT a true rap fan, SERIOUSLY. Listen to the poster above me and azsxdc. Jay-Z will always dominate. Except I disagree the second part of his duo, Lupe, but that's another story, and everyone has his/her valid and legit opinion (Lupe is actually beasty, just not at the top). Yours, however, is just incomprehensible and for lack of a better word, WRONG. I am a true rap fan (like azsxdc, unlike you I'm sure), attending innumerable shows and concerts everywhere, from West Oakland to LA and NYC (I lived in the first two, and yeah, in not-so-suburbia areas). I've listened and kept track of rap since I was little, having been exposed to it at such a young age. I've listened to the majority, if not all, of the top mainstream/underground rappers for the past 20 years. It's a addictive hobby of mine.

he's almost 40 and won't be hitting the charts with anything similar to 2x platinum in under a month like Wayne.

stop making a fool of yourself. you say everyone has their own "legit" opinion, but mine is completely wrong lmao. you even failed to address what my opinion was, just that i'm wrong. Instead you go on to boast how you are the true rap fan like you're trying to win some award for listening to music you like. i don't think you understand that i love jay, but his time has passed. wayne is 26... Jay 40. i think wayne will be at the top of the charts and jay not so much.

i thought this interesting too. jay began is real career at age 27 and came out with the classic "the blueprint" at age 31. wayne is 26 and look what he's already done.

that's just my seriously honest opinion as a true rap fan.

i think akitt is right. jay-z is gettin old, but you never know. also, repzolow what was the point of your post to show your a rap fan lol?

anyways, i can't stop listening to tha carter III. i've pretty much overplayed the first 5 songs so i'm gettin to the end of the album and it's good. phone home is dope and so is you aint got nuthin.

also, whoever said rap is all about vulgar topics is just ignorant. shoot me down, don't get it, tie my hands are not about aimless topics haha.

weezy does it all on this album. 2x platinum is also very impressive, i think at least.

ack27, I mentioned it because AKittka pretty much discredits those (as not true fans) who don't agree with him/her.

AKittka,
That's actually a good point. You've made me doubt Jay now .

Just a footnote though: Plats show trends and pretty much popular clubbing music, but do they really show true artistic ability?

2x platinum speaks for itself. take what you want from it, but i think it means the artist at least has above-average talent, a large fan base, and good marketing abilities.

If you want definitive proof that a platinum record is not an indicator of any rap skill whatsoever, you should know that Shaquille O'neal's first record went platinum. Why don't you give it a listen?

2x platinum in under a month. yes, he has "rap skill", you're just being unreasonable and stubborn by not giving wayne any credit for being at least good. you're just ****ed that he says he's the best, but you don't think so, so then you completely hate on him like he has no talent at all. please.

Shaq is garbage. how could you even compare their albums, wow?

Lil Wayne

I see no changes. All I see is racist faces.
Misplaced hate makes disgrace for races we under.
I wonder what it takes to make this one better place...
let's erase the wasted.
Take the evil out the people, they'll be acting right.
'Cause mo' black than white is smokin' crack tonight.
And only time we chill is when we kill each other.
It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other.
And although it seems heaven sent,
we ain't ready to see a black President, uhh.
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact...
the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks.
But some things will never change.
Try to show another way, but they stayin' in the dope game.
Now tell me what's a mother to do?
Bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you.
You gotta operate the easy way.
"I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way.
Sellin' crack to the kids. "I gotta get paid,"
Well hey, well that's the way it is.

Tupac

How could you possibly compare those two rappers?
THREAD WINNER.

Dude you own. Tupac is the best rapper ever. As for the best rapper that is alive, that is probably nas or eminem. Any of the "lils" along with soulja boy, kanye west, and snoop dogg are all terrible and mainstream. It just shows how crappy rap has become since tupac disappeared. Not died. >.> <.<

kansas city.
for example: YouTube - Tech N9ne The Rain Welcome Back Party Hard
YouTube - Prozak - Why feat. Tech N9ne & Twista
YouTube - Big Krizz Kaliko-"Anxiety"
YouTube - Kutt Calhoun - Get Ready <<especially check this one out, the beat is from britney spears toxic, but it's hella nice
