Whatever happened to that Global Cooling theory that was the hot topic of the 90s?

Well, global warming is expected to cause overall warming but also more extremes (warmer than usual in summer, colder in winter). one reason why it can be colder is that the melting of the ice caps will lower sea temperatures which directly affect trade winds through upper canada (oceanic current in pacific flows clockwise, meaning water flows from north down along western US, down south, than back north along eastern ocean therefore ocean along canada is frigid from northern caps) so that can create frigid temperatures in canada and northern states like Illinois.

So it's not like cold temperatures means global warming isn't happening, ice ages are initially caused after warming periods!

Yeah. That's a good explanation. People use the argument "Well, I see snow out my window. Global warming's a hoax." But it's been known for quite some time (pre-Gore bandwagon!) that warming trends are marked by more extreme temperature fluxuations of cold and warm than just by an overall warming. The "global cooling" fiasco of the 70s (not 90s) may have been part of this oscillation.

Have to focus on overall average global temperature (which is rising) and the source (which is debated, though most scientists agree humans have some impact, just not sure how much).

The earth is warming, but like some ppl said it's supposed to have temperature fluxes... my bio teacher says when she was younger, everyone was freaking out over "global cooling" lol...

But we do have issues w/pollution, deforestation, etc.

Global Warming was a myth made up by the left during the Bush administration to make America hate him. There's proof; even scientific magazines are now telling Gore to apologize for lying now that Obama is about to become president.

Well said.

What's next, people dismissing warnings of global temperature change because it's "only" by a degree or two?

ahaha! Oh the bliss of ignorance! Let me ask, are you just blindly listening to conservative radio shows and regurgitating what they say? I ask because clearly someone wouldn't make such an idiotic statement. (By the way, I say the same thing to liberals screaming that we are single-handedly destroying the planet)

Let's try this again: the Earth is warming, period. That isn't the debate! What isn't known is the extent (or existence) of human involvement. No sensible person who has looked at the data would claim it is a "myth". It is absolutely true that the earth goes thru periods of warming and cooling (this could just be one of those periods!), but it's also true that increase CO and other greenhouse gas generally leads to increased temperatures, and humans are clearly emitting much more greenhouse than naturally given off by the planet. That's the debate: the cause, not whether it is happening or not.

But still, I have to ask, even if it is discovered that we aren't the main influences of earth's rising temperature, why not try and limit pollutants entering our atmosphere?

I wish I could link you guys some papers by planetary astrophysicists, but you have to be a subscriber with APJ (Astrophysical Journal). They have some pretty good graphs and explanations about various aspects.

I think that post was a troll. No one admitted to an accredited university could seriously make that claim. Then again, I think a lot of conservative-minded people heard of global warming for the first time from Al Gore. I think they believe it originated with him.

If you're not a troll, you should know that people were studying global warming trends DECADES before the Bush administration - the first data dates back to the 1950s. If one can pinpoint any decade that it reached mainstream consciousness, it would probably be the '90s. It's been taught in school curriculums at least that long and a report was presented before Congress in 1988 about scientific evidence of global warming.

All Gore did - like Michael Moore on other issues - was push it into popular culture. No conspiracy. Sorry. Just an effort to save our civilization. You know...that whole pro-life thing... It's not just for babies anymore!

Exactly. It's like they want to shoot the messenger than actually listen to the message.

PS If Gore had won in 2000, would Joe Lieberman have been our president now? Almost makes you glad Bush "won".

Nah. There are certain people that just aren't cut out to make that leap to the top office. Joe Biden would be a good example, as would Sarah Palin. Deputy Dog is another.

I hope Palin runs in 2012. We haven't seen a good old-fashioned landslide in a while.
