Happy National Coming Out Day!

I celebrated by attending a lesbian wedding today! Refreshingly, I experienced the coming together of two genuinely caring, kind, and loving families. All the parents and siblings of the two lucky people were in attendance.

Too often, in my experience, this isn't the case. I met a young woman once who came out to her mother. The courageous young lady was given a choice. Attend a summer-long, sexual identity reassignment camp? Leave town and not return until she's straight?

She decided to call her mother's bluff. Her mother, unfortunately, wasn't bluffing. With the help of their misguided pastor, the girl's parents packed her things, changed the locks and refused to let the girl back in the house. She had just turned eighteen, hadn't yet graduated high school, and was suddenly on her own.

She's had the courage to perservere. In this spirit, I wish all of you - those of you who have yet to come out - the courage to do the same. Your allies, gay and straight, are out there and ready to lend a hand. Lots of love to you!
