Peer-to-peer lending

Sites like Lending Club seem like an interesting way to earn some money on savings since they promise interest rates of around 10% annually. However, looking at the detailed statistics, default rates are actually extremely high, except for highest grade of loans. Does anyone have any experience with this or have any thoughts?
