Is it wrong to write down on my Application that I am African American?

I was born in souh Africa, but am white with blue eyes and blonde hair. I was recently told I should write down that I am African American. I feel that gives the wrong idea to admissions officers.
What do you think I should do?

Yes, it is wrong. They mean black. You know, those other people in South Africa who, until recently, weren't treated like human beings.

an African American is a designation given to black skinned Americans born in the US, whose ancestors from Africa were brought over to America as slaves. It does not apply to descendants of white Afrikaners from South Africa.

In addition, I believe a black-skinned African who then became an American citizen would qualify.

If it asks for ethnicity you should put down white. If it asks for nationality, put down African or American or wherever your citizenship is.
