Essay Phrasing

What sounds better:

"...and remind me where I've come from."

or

"...and remind me from where I've come."

"...and remind me from where I've come."
It is improper english to end a sentence with a preposition.

but for an admissions essay, the 1st sounds better because it sounds more natural. the 2nd, although gramatically correct, doesn't sound like something most people would say...

I would use "and remind me of where I came from" unless you have to have the "have come." And the preposition thing is ok, because the readers are looking for a natural flow and not picky about grammar. Those are the kinds of rules the teachers told you back in the day when you didn't know what you were doing; but now you're a stronger writer and the rules can be broken.

yeah, i think the first sounds better as well. it sounds more natural. the second sounds like you're trying too hard. im sure either way will be fine, though. i mean, one sentence isn;t go to make or break your chances anywhere :P

The "don't end a sentence with a preposition" is the dumbest "rule" ever to enter English. If your essay is conversational use the first version and let the grammar Nazis suck eggs. If it has a formal tone, swallow your pride and use the second.

Uh, if you want to be GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT, don't end your sentences with a preposition.

Given the choice between a construction that sounds stilted and a construction that some people still consider grammatically suspspect, I'd vote for coming across like yourself and ending with the preposition.

But could you write around this?

. . . . reminds me of my roots.

. . . reminds me of where I've been.

. . . reminds me of the obstacles I've had to overcome.

or whatever, depending on the context
