Great (or at Least Pretty Good) First Lines

Just post the first sentence or two of your favorite admissions essay. Here's my son's:

"It was not the first time I had run for Patrol Leader in my Boy Scout troop."

I'm not a wonderfully creative person, so most of my first lines were pretty mundane. But hey, I still got into all 12 schools where I applied (I didn't apply to Ivies, though), so I guess first lines aren't everything. I do admit that good first lines can help a lot, though.

Anyway, I guess my favorite first line from one of my essays was "Dear Michael,". The prompt asked us to write a piece of advice I would give to a ten year old, and as my brother happened to be just about that age, I wrote it as a letter to him. I really liked the essay, as I got to think about it more as a personal thing to him than simply a college admissions essay.
