University of maryland essay

This is the next application task on my list:

Please choose one of the following topics and write an essay 2-3 pages in length.

1. At the University of Maryland, we value a diverse community. How have your life experiences and background shaped you into an individual who will enrich the University of Maryland community?
2. Write a question of your own and respond to it. We encourage you to be thoughtful and creative.
3. If you could meet with any figure in time, historical or otherwise, who would it be and why? Describe your conversation. How has this person impacted you and your values?

I was a bit taken aback by seeing 2-3 pages, especially when every other application gives a word limit. Would they mean double spaced formatting? It's not too bad in that case, but still seems a bit long. If I'm going to have to do that, should I scratch trying to write it in the form of a narrative? My english teacher and counselor endorse telling stories b/c they're more interesting (which i agree with) but it doesn't seem like the best approach for all topics. Is it ok to simply answer the question plainly but to emphasize on personal voice instead.

Also, about how many words is 2-3 pages?

word count for doubled spaced 2-3 pages
    is about 700 words

    for single spaced 2-3 pages
    is about 1,200 words

the essay probably has to be doubled spaced

story telling gives the reader that you are showing why you belong in the school and expresses who you are, if you tell then he doesn't get the glimpse of what you feel and how you express

story shows examples, which are essential

if you want me to look at essay after you write it

700 words isn't so bad. I also responded in my other post to clarify what I mean by the style of writing i want to use. I definetly do not want to simply tell them about me.

The original post was made in 2006. So the essay requirements very well could have changed from then to now.
