Please choose one of the following topics and write an essay 2-3 pages in length.
1. At the University of Maryland, we value a diverse community. How have your life experiences and background shaped you into an individual who will enrich the University of Maryland community?
2. Write a question of your own and respond to it. We encourage you to be thoughtful and creative.
3. If you could meet with any figure in time, historical or otherwise, who would it be and why? Describe your conversation. How has this person impacted you and your values?
I was a bit taken aback by seeing 2-3 pages, especially when every other application gives a word limit. Would they mean double spaced formatting? It's not too bad in that case, but still seems a bit long. If I'm going to have to do that, should I scratch trying to write it in the form of a narrative? My english teacher and counselor endorse telling stories b/c they're more interesting (which i agree with) but it doesn't seem like the best approach for all topics. Is it ok to simply answer the question plainly but to emphasize on personal voice instead.
