Beaming sunrays snuck through the thick layer of flourishing verdure, flickering on my face as I stood in the middle of the field. My face wrinkled a broad grin at the sight of my red kite propelled by crispy breezes of autumn, soaring high in the sky
Situated in the suburban of HCMC, this land is completely untouched, and so beautiful. It can cheer me up, calm my mind, bring out my creative sparks and warm my heart. Go with me and I’ll show you everything.
After placing my bike against the wooden fence, I would droop over to pull out my of-all-time companion: the bright red kite that mom gave me on my 12th birthday. As I watched the kite swaying back and forth in the vast gulp of blue above, I imagined myself being lifted from the ground like a tiny feather, blending in with the brisk winds. With my mind roaming freely, I let myself being whisked to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where the breathtaking view would just blow my heart away; to the land of Iraq, where pure reality would feed my visions on the destruction of wars better than any history textbook; to a sultry afternoon exploring the Great Pyramid in Cairo, where all the intricate architecture and thousand-year myths would stimulate my brain to function that its highest power…The sky is the road on which my wheels jangling- The wind is my vehicle- The bright red kite is my fellow- and my imagination is the driver
Landing safely back to earth, I rested on the lush green field, knees drawn to my chin; sometimes I picked up a lump of pebbles to pelt at my shimmering reflection in the brook flowing smoothly nearby. That’s the magical moment when I suddenly thought of how to end my short story with a twist of wit and humor, what to buy for my dad’s 46th birthday, who to team up with my advanced chemistry project, how to drop an egg from 5 feet without breaking the shell, what kind of “insider’s” advice I would give my brother with his first crush, where to seek sponsor for the community outreach program I’m nurturing… There are also times when I swiftly make some rough pencil sketches expressing how I felt this week as a whole before the field drown in the stealthy flood of darkness. Those sketches can be a heart glowing in pink, a melting candle shimmering in the murky shadow, or simply a portrait of myself with the two fingers forming the shape of the letter V-Victory…
The place is too beautiful, all too simplistically carved with the flowers that are a blaze of colors, the wild weeds, and all too often strewed with my spirit, my sobbing and my laughing, my struggle and my growing up into a strong young teenage girl who wants to taste the whole world.
I took one final breath, hopped on the saddle and spun the pedal.
The sun had almost slid down under the streamline of skyscrapers but the sky-my road, the wind-my vehicle, the kite-my fellow would always be there for me no matter where I go, no matter what I do. With them by my side, I’m ready to take on any challenges and curveballs life will be throwing at me to stand tall in the end.
