Don't use the words "unique," "myriad," "challenging," and "rewarding."
For example, avoid:
I am a student who has always enjoyed a challenge, whether it was my school's most challenging classes or a myriad of afterschool activities, including many rewarding leadership positions, I did them all and through them gained a unique outlook on my future...et cetera.
Look up the admissions officers who reads your name/area, google them and try to write something geared towards them.

Don't try to fit EVERYTHING about yourself into 500 words; that is impossible, and your essay will end up vague and dull. Instead, pick what you consider to be one of your most important or intriguing qualities and describe it using vivid detail.
