No, I haven't read the book. I have generally been told to stay away from being humorous (different people have different senses of humor) and I think it would be safe to abide by this rule. However, there is nothing wrong with an "oddball" essay about your fascination with...oh, I don't know... cranberries or something and how you worked in a cranberry bog once, etc. if that is what you mean by "funny." Then again, you don't want to sound too wierd and it must be personal/insightful.
Of course, it's probably all realtive, since most of the advice I've recieved about essay-writing has been something like:
Be subjective, but be objective about it!
So you should probably just go with your gut. Still don't know how I came up with the cranberry example...
