My college essays

I am currently a senior.
To start off my questions...

I was on the cross country and track team for both freshman and sophomore year.

In my junior year, I did not do cross country and track. However I did do badminton.

I did not join cross country in my senior year, but I am going to do badminton.

I am applying to the UCs and CSUs and probably some private colleges such as Stanford and Cal Tech.

Would writing about a cross country final meet I participated in during sophomore year be an excellent idea for a prompt about a personal accomplishment? I remember the event vividly and will probably continue to cherish and be proud of it. The grueling event reflects who I am as a person and student, but I did not do cross country for two years. (schoolwork and not feeling up to the task of running were primary reasons). Can this essay be a strong compliment to my college application?

For the second UC prompt, I am considering writing about how my family has always encouraged me to try new things and break away from tradition, such as being more westernized instead of sticking more to my traditional asian roots. My family members lives have often reflected this motive or hobby of encouraging me to be do something different.

What do you think?
