does a serious topic need a serious essay?

I'm thinking of topics like Amherst's "difficulty need not foreshadow despair or defeat. Rather achievment can be all the more satisfying because of obstacles surmounted" quote, which is sort of serious. However, I find it much easier to write a lighthearted, funny response than something profoundly deep. Is that ok, or will they think my essay stupid?

The best response will be the most personal, detailed, honest and revealing. The one that feels like your own self, your own voice.

Since you find it easier to write something lighthearted, go ahead and try that. Then, after a day or two, see how you like your first draft.
