why you chose your major essay - tips

PROMPT: Explain why you have chosen your major, department or program. This essay should include the reasons why you’ve chosen the major, any goals or relevant work plans and any other information you would like us to know. If you are applying to more than one college or program, please mention each college or program you are applying to.

this prompt is for carnegie mellon school of cs.

my essay is towards the technical side and basically just expresses my passion, knowledge, and vision about the field i'm want to do research in. i talk about trends i notice in the field and how i want to leverage these trends in my research. i have provided university-specific examples regarding how i plan to implement my research plans. overall, i didnt treat this topic as a personal statement but instead a place to express what intellectually captivates me and how i am going to pursue the same.

i havent dedicated a lot of space to talk about my science and research ecs but have mentioned them.

do you think overall this is a good strategy or do i need to take a different approach? if different approach, elaborate plz

also on a side note, are the readers for these essays knowledgeable in the field that is represented by the school or are they plain admission readers with no technical background?

Imo your essay should be understandable to a nontechnical reader. You can go into technical things, but in such a way that a nontechnical person can get the main ideas and won't lose interest. Go for the main ideas, not every little nuance.

Otherwise, your plan sounds reasonable to me.
