Optional Transfer Essay. Do I write it?

I'm applying to UNC-CH for the fall 2008 semester as a transfer student from a Community college with an associates degree.

There is one mandatory essay that is:

"Why do you want to transfer to Carolina, and what do you believe you will contribute to campus life?"

I wrote it and had my CC literature prof help me iron it out, and I feel it is very strong.
There is an optional essay that is as follows:

"Is there anything else you would like to share with us regarding your background or interests? For example, do you have any exceptional talents or passions? Have you overcome exceptional difficulties or challenges? Have you participated in any programs or activities that you would like to share with us?"

I fit into the first essay most of what the prompt has asked for in the second.

I want to do everything to increase my chances, but i don't want to repeat myself or write something crappy just for the sake of doing it.

BTW I've tried to write it several times, creating 3 or 4 drafts, and it just ends up being crap.

Do I have to write it? Is there a possibility that it may hurt my chances?

It's called an optional essay for a reason: you do not have to write it. If they really wanted the answer to those questions, then it would be mandatory. I think especially because you say you answered many of those questions in the first that unless you strongly feel something is missing from your app otherwise, you should just leave it alone. Not writing an optional essay can't hurt your chances, but writing an optional essay that is absolute crap may. Good luck!
