How to start the essay

I am transfering schools

The question is:
"In 500 words or less, describe any personal circumstances or academic experiences (positive or negative) that you feel are important for us to
know about you."

I'm writing it about my first semester at my current school and how that experience help me decide on my future career goals (or more atleast what I was not interested in pursuing)

My problem is I can't figure out how to start the essay without the typical "My first semester at *** has helped shape my career interests because". I have never been able to begin essays or other writing effectively and I am becoming extremely frustrated trying to think up a BS photogenic nice sounding way to begin it.

Any advice would be much appreciated

The thing about a "BS photogenic nice sounding way to begin it" is that it will come across just as you described it. Be honest and straightforward. "My first semester at *** taught me ___ / showed me ___" is a fine opener. What comes after it is more important.

Have you written other parts of the essay? If not, do that first and then come back to the introduction later.

If you are stressed just because you have to write the essay, why don't you record it? then type it? I am sure that if you were talking to me, you would be able to explain me how this academic year helped you make a decision. So why don't you record it on a mp3 or your laptop then write everything down while you will be listening to your voice? If you have siblings who will agree with you , you could talk to them and ask them to write everything you say.

^ That's quite a good idea, and I might use that for myself in the future. Although if I asked my sister to type up what I say, she'd be like wth?! do it yourself!

EDIT: I don't want to give the impression that my sister is inconsiderate! She's very nice otherwise, but she has her own commitments that she rightfully has to deal with first.

Hhah Sci-fi I think that my siblings would say the same thing as your sista (LoL). The only person who would not mind would be my parents but they are too busy nor did not send me to school to become my secretary.
