Using popular fictional characters bad?

I read somewhere that using tv characters, superheroes, and cartoon/fictional characters are a don't in essays. Is that true? Or does it really depend on how you are including them?

I'm not sure, I have that same question (thinking about writing about a fictional character)...it probably depends on how you write the essay, whether it's cheesy and superficial or actually meaningful. Anything can be made into a good essay, and this doesn't seem too common, anyway

I read a wonderful essay about how a certain TV character was the writer's hero.

Like all good college essays, though, the essay was really about the writer, not about the character.
