I wrote this some months ago and my offer still stands, even though I am no longer very active on these forums. (Quick bio: I'm a J-schooler who will nitpick over both style and content. FWIW, I know AP style, although colleges won't care which conventions you stick to.)

Just drop me a PM and I'll read. No need to ask if I want to read - send the essay in your first PM so I can respond to it faster.

Also, please include the prompt and program(s)/college(s) to which you're applying whenever you ask anyone to read your essay. It's far more difficult to judge an essay when you don't know what prompt to judge it on!

At least for me, it'd be helpful to know when you need feedback by or when the essay is due - I don't want to have to rush through something you sent at 1 a.m. if I don't need to.

I'm only going to offer to read essays just this summer, from now until the beginning of the school year in September. My essays were incredibly strong and helped me get into all of the colleges I applied to. I only applied to C, H, S, Penn, and UCs, so I'm only familiar with these supplements, if they haven't changed. I'm not a grammarian and I'm not going to spend time fixing your spelling; however, I can help you put the story, emotions, and feelings that are absolutely necessary for a great essay. Keep in mind these things when selecting people to look at your essay.

1) Do a search of people on this thread who have given positive compliments to others. It's better to go by track record rather than the most recent posters in the last few pages of a thread.

2) Keep in mind CCers that say they'll look at "subjective" things give just that...absolutely subjective opinions. These opinions mean as much as the jr. high kid down the street. Just because someone attends a certain college does not mean that person wrote better essays. Their style might not be congruent with your applicant profile personality. And too many opinions lead to conflicting opinions.

3) Applicant profile personality. You're supposed to differentiate yourself from the 10,000-50,000 other kids applying to the same college as you. Keep that in mind. Admission officers don't look for the best writers. They look for the best representative group of students to create the type of class portfolio they desire.

3b) With that said, grammar rules can be broken if you intentionally break it. Formal academia does not teach the art of rhetoric that is critical to crafting a fine college essay.

4) Admission officers are not demi-gods; they are people. They are fallible. They are manipulable. Keep in mind that you're writing to PEOPLE and not MACHINES.

5) If I can read your essay and substitute the name of my university for any other university and the essay will still logically make sense...you completely screwed up.


I've been helped on these forums a long time ago. I've independently helped many since. You do not need to know my specific credentials because 1) it doesn't matter unless I've previously been an admission officer (and have seen 1000s of essays of year, thus fundamentally changing the way I approach essays) and 2) to protect my identity. But you can PM me if you like. No guarantees. No essays for lower tier state schools (because they honestly don't care about essays as much as a certain numerical threshold).

*colleges you're applying to (with deadlines)
*demonstrate a willingness to keep in touch beyond the bounds of the essay correction. I do this strictly for networking, not for altruism. You can request my specific credentials in PM, and I will provide them. My time is valuable, and I don't waste it on people that do not repay the favor.

I don't log on here frequently, so you have to have other means to contacting me (FB, email, etc.)

Also, if I like you, I will take care of you, meaning I'll help you revise until you get your essay right and I'll give you samples/examples/other aid. However, I will only do that if your essay has potential and there is effort there to begin with.
