The Use of Informal Language

How formal are your personal statements supposed to be? What are your guys' feelings on contractions, ambiguous pronounce usage, passive voice, etc.?

Oh, and will it look good I try to be clever with my literature? As in using extended metaphors, and repetition of word to imply hidden messages (you know like what all those "classic" writers use in their works). Or should I just try to keep things straight forward with vivid imagery?

Keep things straightforward w/ vivid imagery.

Contractions = ok.

Ambiguous pronounce usage? do you mean ambiguous pronouns? because no, dont use them.

Passive voice = always a no.

Adcoms are not going to have the time to analyze papers. And I'm sure although it would show how smart you are, might infuriate them.
