I'm having an essay-cooperative for editing with the top 4 of my class (I'm not worried about them stealing my essays, because we're all really close friends). I'd say it's a good idea, and remember that you don't have to take their advice.
If they're really your friends, you shouldn't worry about them being dishonest or anything...especially if you're not applying to the same schools. I'd say ask them for an essay in exchange so that it's not so one sided; that way both of you guys can critique each other's essays. And if she/he "steals" one of yours (unlikely) you still have one of theirs too.
